In the early 2000s, Cuban educators created the “Yo, sí puedo” literacy learning method for international cooperation. Since then, it has been implemented in some 30 regions of the world, including countries of the Global North such as Canada. In this presentation, we will discuss the characteristics of the Yo, sí puedo method, the process of developing the programme for the Canadian context, and its implementation in an Indigenous community in British Columbia. This will allow us to discuss the successes and limitations of this initiative and to reflect on the implications of this rare example of cooperation carried out in a “South-North” dynamic.
