This seminar is in partnership with the UK charity, Friends of Ibba Girls School, South Sudan (FIGS), of which Jean is a trustee.

Keynote speakers:

Pia Philip

Undersecretary, Ministry of Peacebuilding, Government of the Republic of South Sudan

“Peace does not arrive from abroad in the cargo at Juba airport. It has to start in daily life in our families, communities, schools, churches, governments, and jobs.”

Archbishop Samuel Peni

Episcopal Church of South Sudan, Diocese of Western Equatoria State

Negotiating peace with rebels including child soldiers. Preparing for peace through schooling, skills, and further education.

Our keynote speakers are two towering leaders of the peacebuilding and development process in South Sudan. These two courageous people are deeply engaged in work at local, state, national and cross-national levels, using similar approaches (truth, justice, peace and reconciliation) to those practiced by Archbishop Desmon Tutu in the transition from apartheid in South Africa:

The participants, a range of academics with expertise in peacebuilding, education and global development, will bring their expertise to the discussion with our keynote speakers with the aim providing practical support and ideas to South Sudan, while also learning from the experiences in that country which are of wider value.

The participants include:

  • Professor Kwame Ayeampong, The Open University: Education’s role in global development
  • Emeritus Professor John Benington, University of Warwick, and Dr Loua Khalil, Henley Business School: Leadership for peacebuilding in highly conflicted societies
  • Dr Jane Cullen, The Open University: School education in conflict zones: Reflections from several countries experiencing violent conflict
  • Professor Jacqui Gabb, The Open University: Tackling inequalities
  • Professor Jean Hartley, The Open University: Public leadership
