Abstract

In this talk, Dr Will Smith begins by discussing the diverse ways in which education has positively impacted the world, for example, in access, nutrition, peacebuilding, and mobility. He examines how education has affected our social and economic development, both nationally and internationally, drawing upon research from within Moray House to exemplify this.

Professor Sarah McGeown follows with a discussion of the value and importance of research-practice partnerships (RPPs) to bring about positive real-world change. She discusses the benefits and methodological considerations associated with RPPs and the key enablers required to create and sustain environments which better connects research and practice.

Biographies

Dr Will Smith is Director of Internationalisation and Senior Lecturer in Education and International Development. He currently leads the school’s research group and masters programme in Comparative Education and International Development (CEID), and researches on disrupted education and barriers to access for the most marginalised children and youth.

Professor Sarah McGeown is Professor of Literacy, and was joint winner of the University of Edinburgh Impact Prize for Sustained Partnership in 2024 based on her work within the Literacy Lab. She routinely works within research-practice partnerships, and is an enthusiastic advocate for this approach.
