Join ERICC for a new seminar series promoting dialogue on education research in conflict and protracted crisis situations. This event will be held online.

UCL Institute of Education is launching a seminar series, chaired by Professor Tejendra Pherali, which will showcase emerging research from focal countries of the Education Research in Conflict and Protracted Crisis (ERICC) programme— including Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, South Sudan, Nigeria, Bangladesh and Myanmar — and engage in critical and inclusive dialogue with the wider community of researchers, graduate students, and policy makers and practitioners in educational work in conflict and crisis settings.

This first webinar will bring together the three ERICC British Academy Bilateral Chairs, joined by Discussant Professor Simone Datzberger, to introduce their ongoing work in three conflict-affected settings — Cox’s Bazar – Bangladesh, Iraq and Lebanon — and promote dialogue and synergy between ongoing ERICC research in these contexts and more widely across and beyond the seven ERICC Consortium’s focal countries.

A part of the ERICC Programme, the ERICC Research Programme Consortium is a global research and learning partnership that strives to transform education policy and practice in conflict and protracted crisis around the world, through building a global hub for rigorous, context-relevant, and actionable evidence base. The ERICC Consortium identifies key gaps and prioritizes critical issues with end-user stakeholders for improving access, quality and continuity of education in conflict and protracted crisis settings, and for supporting support sustainable and coherent education systems and holistic learning and development of children in conflict and crisis. The ERICC Consortium is led by IRC and UCL in collaboration, and expert partners include the Centre for Lebanese Studies, the Common Heritage Foundation, Forcier Consulting, ODI, Osman Consulting, Oxford Policy Management and the Queen Rania Foundation.

The British Academy (BA) Bilateral Chairs programme forms one part of a wider ERICC Programme, supported by UK International Development from the UK government, that focuses on education systems strengthening in conflict and crisis settings by developing and expanding the research strength of their institutions and more broadly their impact nationally, regionally and internationally in the field of education research on conflict and crisis. The BA Chairs programme aims to develop the institutions’ ability to support, foster and build strong education research cultures that can be sustained over the long-term; enhance the support for masters and doctoral students. The BA Chairs focus on education system strengthening in Bangladesh, Iraq and Lebanon and the work is being led by Dr Justine Howard, Professor Kelsey Shanks and Professor Maha Shuayb respectively.
