In recent years, policies have shifted to encourage the integration of refugee children into a host country’s national system, recognising the need for sustainable solutions within contexts of protracted displacement. This presentation delves into the Jordanian context and explores the double-shift system; an integration model that allows Syrian refugees to integrate into national schools, though they attend school hours in the afternoon and are separated from Jordanian students.
The presentation draws on a study conducted with Syrian refugee students attending secondary education, exploring their own sense of belonging and aspirations within their educational spaces. By sharing their experiences of living and learning in Jordan, this presentation discusses the role that education plays in expanding opportunities and well-being in contexts of displacement. It showcases the importance of further examining local structures and practices in schools and their implications on achieving equity and inclusion.
