25 April, 14:00-15:30 BST
Chair: Charlotte Nussey
Presenters: Jackline Nyerere, John Muchiri, Anakalo Shitandi
Discussant: TBC
This webinar will feature discussions on the Participatory Action Research (PAR) activities undertaken by three Climate-U universities in Kenya, Kenyatta University (KU), Kisii University (KSU) and Kenya Methodist University (KeMU). Researchers from the three participating universities in Kenya will reflect on the PAR process of implementing Climate-U in their institutions as well as share findings on qualitative case studies in the three universities.
Presentations on PAR processes and activities will centre on problem inquiry, framing and designing interventions to strengthen the university’s climate action. Specifically, there will be reflections on mainstreaming climate change into the three universities’ curricula and developing new pedagogies for delivering the revised courses. Discussions on the interventions will also focus on the Climate-U greening activities currently piloted in the three universities among them the establishment of Green Education Hub at KU, the low carbon and renewable energy efforts at KSU, and afforestation and waste management practices at KeMU.
The presenters will explore how the three universities use their tripartite teaching, research and community service roles to engage in climate action. KU’s qualitative case study covers the extent of climate change content coverage in the university’s curricula and campus greening activities, as well as the opportunities and challenges in the university’s involvement in climate action. KSU’s qualitative study addresses carbon literacy among smallholder farmers in the immediate community, while KeMU’s study focuses on documenting indigenous knowledge of the Ameru ethnic community on climate action.
Following the presentation and invited response, there will be an open discussion and debate with the webinar participants.
This event is open to all those with an interest in the issues under discussion. The event is free to attend, but registration on Eventbrite is required.
