In today’s troubled world, more and more children and youth are living in conflict and crisis settings. Many in classrooms outside of these hotspots are also impacted by the violence experienced by extended family members and/or witnessed through social media. Social emotional learning is becoming more critical for all. To be relevant, local and global dynamics must influence decision making on how best to provide SEL programming and how to most appropriately measure the impact on vulnerable learners. The OECD and NYU have produced powerful research that can help guide us to best serve all of our students.

Join panelists Catharina Gress-Wright (Analyst, SEL Lead, Organisation for Co-operation and Development (OECD); Paris, France) and J. Lawrence Aber (Willner Family Professor of Psychology and Public Policy, New York University/Wagner; New York, USA), Ha Yeon Kim (Senior Research Scientist, Global TIES for Children, NYU; New York, USA) and facilitator Dominic Regester (Director, Center for Education Transformation, Salzburg Global Seminar; Salzburg, Austria) for this compelling discussion. Registrants are welcome to engage with these leaders through the chat.

  1. What does the research say about the impact of SEL in settings of conflict and crisis
  2. How does the research align with findings from the most recent OECD Survey on Social and Emotional Learning?
  3. What are the challenges with providing programming and measuring social and emotional skills in these settings? What are some promising practices?

4.What advice do you have for teachers, principals and senior education leaders who are in schools worldwide with children and youth coming from and/or connected in some way to conflict and crisis settings?
