Dr Matthew Jukes, Fellow in International Education, RTI International

This seminar introduces the PLAY measurement toolkit – a suite of tools to measure adult support for children’s engagement in learning. The toolkit is designed for children aged 0-12 years and measures the support they receive from teachers in classrooms and from caregivers at home.

The tool had been developed and validated in 10 low- and middle-income countries with support from the Lego Foundation. A recent World Bank study in primary schools in Ethiopia, Sierra Leone and Peru found that the tool was strongly predictive of student learning. The presentation will include discussion of the use and validation of the toolkit and the implications of study findings for strategies to promote student engagement in the home and classroom.
